DECEMBER 5, 2021 - BLESSING OF PEACE

During advent we light a candle each week that brings us closer to the birth of the Christ Child. This Sunday, we light the candle of Peace. Peace, like blessings, is a word often stripped or misused in our everyday language. Just as blessing isn't synonymous for good fortune neither is peace the same as calm. Both - when connected to our faith and the work of God are deeper and bigger than we often make them out to be.

NOVEMBER 28, 2021 - HANGING OF THE GREENS

I know what you are thinking..."we just decorated for Christmas last Sunday, what is left to hang up?" The Hanging of the Greens Service is not about hanging up as much as it is a time of sharing stories and remembering the rich meaning and stories that have led to our traditions of evergreens, candles, tree and stars. Various Kirk families will be telling us these old stories as we add the finishing touches to our sanctuary on this first Sunday of Advent. We will light the Candle of Hope and begin our Advent Series: A Season of Blessings!

November 21, 2021 - Conclusion to Re-Churching

It seems every year as the Thanksgiving holiday approaches we as a society are opening ourselves up to a bigger narrative than the one most of us heard as children. While a sacred meal was shared, so too we are naming conflict, power and oppression that played a significant role not only at that table but in the years, decades, centuries that followed. This Sunday, we conclude our re-churching series with the word, "repent." Contrary to what we might assume, repentance isn't about guilt but instead is a path toward reconciliation and transformation.

November 14, 2021 - What is Religion Anyway?

It might seem ironic for a church to talk explicitly about religion since that is what we are, and yet, just like a fish doesn't notice the water it swims in, we tend to overlook the very nature of who and what we are. This Sunday as we continue our Re-Churching Sermon Series we are looking at an essential word: Religion. What does it mean? What does our practice of our faith mean to us, to God? When people say they are religious but not spiritual, how do we respond?

November 7, 2021 - All Saints Day

This Sunday we will be celebrating All Saints Sunday as we remember those in the Kirk we have lost in the past year. As we remember our saints our re-churching word is Revision. Our scripture will be a picture of the Kin-dom painted at the end of our sacred text in the book of Revelation. This image, this vision will guide us in our own dreaming for our lives, our church and our world.
