Disappointment is always hard to deal with . . . and it's particularly so at a younger age. We piled 13 middle schoolers and 5 senior high youth into cars. (Yes, folks, I did count correctly.) Then we added four adults and Oz. And, in high spirits, we headed off to the corn maze at the Botanic Gardens at Chatfield. I had even pre-purchased tickets.
Well, you know what happened . . . despite a beautiful morning and early afternoon, dark clouds were rolling in. When I arrived at church, I found Dana conscientiously googling NOAH. "It'll pass," she proclaimed. I vigorously agreed.
But, even though it was not raining when we left, the sky grew increasingly ominous. And sure enough, the further south we traveled, the harder it rained. When we were almost there, amid a downpour and lightning, I decided to abort . . . if anyone was out in the cornfield during all this, they were goofy. So what does one do with four carloads of kids on the south side of town in a storm? One vetoes an ice cream stop (who's paying for ice cream?) and heads for the Sirnic house.
Confident on my home turf, I pulled out a movie and popcorn. Eighteen disappointed kids told me they weren't interested in watching a movie. But, thank God for Delaney. "We're too excited to sit," she explained with a smile. "Let's just do something." So we did . . . some to the basement, some upstairs. We played charades, we laughed and we were together.
As I helped Oz act out a song, I thought of the old adage: "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade." And then, as I looked around the room, I thought of something else. "in everything, give thanks." Hmm. As with many things in life, it just depends on the attitude you choose. |
