Spiritual Growth and Fellowship in Small Group Opportunities

We are beginning to form three small groups whose purpose is to provide fellowship and opportunities to take the next steps on our journeys of faith.  Each group will be selecting it own study material.  As meeting times and places are established and as study materials are selected we will keep you informed.

The Wednesday Noon group will begin with a light catered lunch at 12:00 each Wednesday in the fellowship hall.  The study portion of the gathering will begin at 12:30.  Fee: $5.00 for lunch.  Reservations are needed.

The Friday and Saturday evening fellowship and study groups will meet once a month on an evening established by those participating in each group.  We begin with our study and then share in a pot luck meal.

If you would like to participate in one of these groups, please contact Rev. Sirnic and he will help you get in touch with each group’s leadership.

If you would like to start a study group that will meet at a different time please contact Mark to get help with starting your ministry opportunity.

Grocery Gift Cards

Some of our older church members are moving out of their homes and into retirement communities where their meals are furnished.  They no longer purchase the grocery gift cards.  If the grocery gift card account is to keep assisting in the church’s financial obligations at $600 per quarter, other church members who haven’t been participating in the program need to take up the slack.

The church makes 5% on the sale of these grocery gift cards, which is a great help to its financial well-being .  We know that everyone must eat.  Therefore, please consider purchasing these gift cards so the account can maintain its current status and provide financial assistance with church expenses.  King Soopers and Safeway cards are available in $100 and $25 denominations.

Go Green - Pull the Plug.

Even if they are not in use, common household appliances and electronics such as microwaves, computers, DVD players and televisions use power when plugged in.  This not only increases your electric bill but increases overall energy consumption—a television that is plugged in but not in use can use as much as 20 watts per hour.  Help curb your energy consumption:  unplug items you rarely use; once portable devices are charged up, unplug the charge from the outlet; and use electronics only as needed.  A simple step to a healthier planet!

KIRK VITALITY TEAM

The Vitality team is continuing to organize in its work of improving our service to the community in Christ’s name.  The four teams that are forming are the prayer team, the research team, the strategy team and the hospitality team.

The prayer team is a gathering of people who are committed to praying for the renewed efforts of the congregation and for the neighborhood around the church and the neighborhoods where our people live.

The community networking team’s purpose is to talk with people in the community to develop a picture of the hopes, dreams, needs, and concerns of the community.

The strategy team has the task of teaching us how to share our faith story as individuals and the story about our community of faith.  And they are also charged with planning activities, programs and events that will be on target with the information gathered by the research team.

The hospitality team is to make sure that the first visit of a guest is handled well and that everything goes smoothly.  They are also charged with the task of making sure that guests “connect” with members and other guests

KIRK VITALITY IDEAS

I have been gratified that some of you read the pastor’s script last month and have begun asking the question, “Where do I fit into the ministries of the Kirk? Am I a Prayer, a Planner, a Player, a Payer, or an Encourager?” (4 P’s and an E.)
Some have even begun to ask questions like: What are the ministries of the Kirk that I can support with my talents and gifts? How can I get involved in a way that makes sense for me?
In the weeks and months to come we will explore those ideas more fully. For now here are a few suggestions: First, It is always wise to begin with prayer. Seek God’s guidance about where God wants you to sever. Second, look at the congregations 5 priorities listed in this newsletter. Third, look at the issues and people in the Prayer Concerns and Joys portion of the newsletter. Fourth, look at the other articles contained in the newsletter and begin talking to the leaders of the different ministries to see how you can offer your service to God, the church and your neighbors.
As with most of life think: If it is to be it’s up to me.
Several years ago when we revised our by-laws we took a major step in the direction of becoming a missional church. We created a set of by-laws that give us flexibility we need to implement new mission and ministry initiatives quickly.
A church identifies the needs of our neighboring community and then develops ways to meet those needs.

Entertainment and Gold C Books

We will be selling Entertainment and Gold C books again this year. This is part of the $2,000 fundraising effort to which we committed in the 2007 budget at the Annual Meeting in January. Last year we earned nearly $500.

The books will be delivered in late August. The prices are the same as last year -- $25 for the Entertainment book and $10 for the Gold C book.

Here are ways you can help us meet our goal:

1. Buy books for yourself and for gifts.

2. Contact people you sold books to last year and get their order for this year.

3. Contact additional people, such as your neighbors, fellow club members.

4. We are trying to get permission to sell the books outside of King Soopers and Safeway on Colorado. We will need volunteers in pairs to do these sales in late August and early September.

THE FIVE PRIORITIES FOR 2008

Each year the church council establishes priorities for the year.  In February of this year we established five priorities on which we want to focus our primary energies.

We have taken steps forward on several of these and we hope to move forward on even more.

1.      Evangelism (developing an intentional program to minister to our neighborhood to spread the good news of God’s love)

2.      Youth Ministries (enhancing our ministry to our youth, hiring a student from Iliff.

3.      Buildings and Grounds (improving and maintaining our buildings and grounds)

4.      Vibrant Worship (making both services vibrant and inspiring)

5.      Stewardship (understanding it as a expression of our spirituality)

Which of these ministry goals speaks to your passion?  Contact any council member to let them know of your interest in getting involved.
